Out of Their Shadow
📍 Strand Theatre, Boston
Sign-up for volunteers are open!
We are honored to partner with Asian Women Development Plan International (AWDPI) to host OUT OF THEIR SHADOW — 别怕,他们追不上了, a post-show anti-violence dialogue and healing space following our performance of Juliet & Jul-Yingtai. This gathering brings together survivors, advocates, artists, mental health providers and community leaders to defy loud archetypes and empower silenced individual voices.
If you or your organization is interested in partnering, co-hosting, or contributing to this conversation, please email us. We are actively building this space with others who care about storytelling, safety, and belonging.
In the play, Juliet says to Jul-yingtai - over and again in their collapsing dreamscape - 别怕,他们追不上了。Join Vermilion in January. Let’s build a shelter with our own bodies.
Juliet & Jul-Yingtai: Learning to Let Go
As we prepare to bring Juliet and Jul-Yingtai to Boston, we’re opening our rehearsal room to the community for a special workshop exploring memory and mortality. Memories and mortality are our ultimate human limitations. Everyone forgets sometimes. Everyone dies in the end. What gives our life meaning is our responses to these inevitables.
Music & Movement-Based Therapy: How music and movement-based creativity can support people living with physical limitations (e.g., chronic pain, dementia).
Meaning-Centered Conversation on Death & Dying: A guided dialogue on value clarification, meaning-making through our life span.
Rooted in the J&J’s themes of reincarnation/轮回, forgetting/孟婆汤, and letting go/放下, this workshop invites participants to connect across generations and languages.
Home as a Verb - Vermilion x Golden Age
Vermilion Theater is honored to receive the Weaving Well-Being Grant from the City of Boston. With this support, we have launched a new iteration of “Home as a Verb” — a community-rooted project that re-imagines home as a dynamic concept and an incessant desire to connect. Through workshops based in music, visual art and creative storytelling, participants are invited to reflect on their past stories in a safe space and live through the present moments with intention. Our current community partner is Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center.
Juliet & Jul-Yingtai
Co-produced by Vermilion Theater Inc and Yale Vermilion Theater (affiliated with Yale University), the Vermilion Bilingual Theater Incubator aims to explore Mandarin-English bilingual adaptations of Classic Shakespeare plays and highlight crossovers with Chinese folktales. Drawing parallels between Juliet and Jul-Yingtai, this original play depicts inward journeys of self-exploration in murderous times, challenging the traditional archetypes of a hopeless romantic and star-crossed lovers.
Home as a Verb - Vermilion x BCNC
“Home as a verb” calls for imagining home as a fluid process and an incessant desire to connect. Here participants crafted personal artifacts, mapped their evolving relationship with their surroundings and shared communal rituals and stories in a safe space. The exhibition celebrates the collective resilience and cultural richness of Boston's Chinatown, inviting all to engage in the process of re-defining home.
Over the past six months, a journey that reimagined 'home' as an active, dynamic process unfolded around Boston's Chinatown, where senior residents engaged in a dynamic artists-in-residence program hosted by Pao Arts Center with Vermilion Theater. This initiative, aligned with the vision of Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, harnessed the transformative power of multi-sensory artistic mediums including sound, visual arts, and movement to bridge generational gaps, celebrate cultural heritage, and foster a profound sense of community.
Romeo and Jul-Yingtai online workshop session 3
The proposed project, Romeo and Jul-Yingtai, aims to leverage such strength in the theater art: the project involves a series of script-writing workshops, community-building events, leading up to stage readings, open rehearsals and eventually opening an original Mandarin-English bilingual production.
We believe that the fundamental humanity transcends the artificial boundary of countries and languages, space and time. Theater art carves out a safe space for us to take risks while staying safe and seen - we will meet there.

Vermilion Five-Night Flight
Vermilion's Five-Night Flight is a festival for all theater-lovers alike. We hope to bring the community together by exploring theater as a box of magic (think props, scenic set, puppets, and dazzling lights); a cathartic channel (think the stage, characters behind or beyond the mask, the self inside or outside of you); and ultimately, a uniting, healing space.
