Intercultural Theater-Making: A Conversation with Stan Lai and Nai-Chu Ding

📍Pauli Murray Head of College House, Yale University
100 Sachem St, New Haven, CT

Open to the public. Space is limited and advance sign-up is required.

Co-organized by Yale Vermilion Theater for Students & Scholars and Vermilion Theater Inc., and hosted with the support of Pauli Murray College and the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures, this special event brings together playwright and director Stan Lai (赖声川) and producer Nai-Chu Ding (丁乃竺), whose work has shaped contemporary Chinese-language theater across borders, languages, and generations.

The program features an interactive workshop followed by a moderated conversation with Professor Tina Lu, exploring bilingual play development and how Chinese myths, folk traditions, and legends can be reimagined for contemporary and cross-cultural audiences. The event also marks the second year of Vermilion’s Mandarin–English Bilingual Theater Incubator, a creative laboratory supporting the communal development of original intercultural works. Participants will be invited to vote on cross-cultural story pairings that may shape the next incubator project.

Bilingual participation is warmly encouraged. Light refreshments will be served.
